Ninja Training Techniques Did You Watch Ninja Movies When You Were A Kid? Do you still remember yourself clad with a ninja outfit and pretend you were a ninja in training? A ninja is one who is an expert in different kinds of martial arts like the art of ninjutsu. Ninjutsu techniques are combination of martial arts, war techniques, and tactics commonly practiced by ninjas in their training. There is no known exact origin of ninjas but it is believed that they were trained rigidly to do espionage and assassination jobs to stop chaos or maybe just to perform a job vested on them by their rulers. They move as fast and as discreet as the wind, this is taught to them during their trainings, therefore a ninja was known to be one who can move almost being unseen. As a matter of fact, one translation of ninja known as Shinobi, literally means Heart over Blade. The concept of Shinobi is to keep going, even when the enemy has a blade over your heart, and to never give up! Talking about servants, warriors and the war techniques, it would be unfair to mention the samurai. The Samurai, when translated means “to serve” thus in a real sense it is either serving his lord or master or serving one’s own country. For one to become an effective server of the lord and nation one should be educated with fighting tactics and that includes expertise in martial arts. As mentioned earlier, ninjutsu is the art of teaching combat techniques, tactics, strategies, and martial arts helpful to win a war. One of the last ninja martial arts schools in Japan that still preserves ninja training is the Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu founded by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi Soke . In the Bujinkan school, one is taught about bone breaking, muscle and joint dislocation of the opponent, ground fighting, and proper handling of traditional and modern ninja weapons to become a Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu Ninja. Being expert in martial arts, ninjas also have weapons that they use to defeat their opponents easier. The most common weapon for ninjas (and also the samurai) is the sword. The difference though is that ninja’s sword known as a ninja-to are slightly shorter than of the samurai’s katana. They use it to slash a limb or any body part or stab an opponent to death. Another common ninja weapon we usually see in ninja movies is the shuko which are spiked claw that helps them climb faster. A poison dart is also used, they usually carry them in their mouths so when the situation calls for the enemy to be killed it would just be so easy to give their opponents a peaceful death. For female ninjas they carry them in their hair. Kakute is a ring dipped in poison. The poisoned ring is used to strangle an opponent to death leaving lesser evidence. The bow and arrow is used both by the ninjas and samurais, they could be long or short bows dipped in poison. Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is martial arts that originated in Japan but now is being taught in different parts of the world including the United States. The training may seem so rigid and painstaking but it is rewarded by an overwhelming sense of achievement. It is not enough to know the best ninja techniques or be the best in handling weapons, what is important is the kind of person you will turn out to be when you will finally be called a real NINJA! For aspiring ninja warriors remember this philosophy from the great master, Masaaki Hatsumi Sensei: “When properly applied, the kamae reflects the ninja’s heart. This means that our physical nature conforms to our intentions, and there is no division between our interior and exterior aspects. This state of integrated mind and body action is totally natural, and can be observed readily in the movements of animals as they interact with their environment. Only human beings seem to develop the need to be trained in natural body motion.” Put in mind that one should not just undergo the rigid ninja training just because they find it cool, there is more to being a ninja. Are you trying to learn ninjutsu – the art of Japan’s ancient shadow warriors – the Ninja? I can understand why. The art of ninjutsu, as a composite martial art, is arguable the most complete system of, not only combat but, living successfully and naturally, that has ever been created.

But, the way that ninjutsu approaches combat still seems to be a mystery, even to most of those who practice it. One reason for this is the tendency to try to apply conventional knowledge, wisdom, and methods when trying to understand how and why we approach any given subject.

The fact is that, to learn ninjutsu, you need a mentor who has been initiated and guided through the training of mind, body, and spirit trainings by another master teacher – one carrying the secrets that have been passed down through the centuries.

One of these secrets centers around how a true ninja sees his weapons. And, while it’s true that the ninja has more weapons than you can imagine, the way he thinks about and relates to the very concept of weapons is beyond the normal scope of most martial artists.

You see, rather than classify weapons by name (i.e. Sword, staff, kyoketsu-shoge, etc.), the true ninja categorizes weapons by type. This system of putting like weapons into a class or category, allows the ninja to see beyond the form of any given weapon, and to even “borrow” the lessons from one tool, and apply it to others.

The 5 weapon classifications of the Ninja’s Combat System include:

1) Bladed – This includes, not only swords, kama (sickles), and other classical weapons, but also knives, and even modern objects like credit card knives (and even credit cards themselves) are included in the category.

2) Stick – Everything from the rokushaku-bo (6′ staff), to the shorter jo, hanbo, and eda-koppo sticks on the classical end of the spectrum, to modern equivalents like broom handles, two-by-fours, pool cues, and even smaller objects like pens, chopsticks, and screwdrivers fit in this weapon “type.”

3) Flexible – This category includes items like ropes, cords, belts, and ancient weapons like the Ninja’s kusari-fundo (weighted-chain). As an extension of this strategy, even things like towels, open newspapers and magazines, and pieces of clothing can be pressed into service as weapons for your defense.

4) Projectile – Not limited to the obvious classical weapons like the arrow and the shuriken (‘throwing star’), weapons in this classification also include small needles, spikes designed for throwing, and – since the introduction of this weapon by the Portuguese – firearms.

5) Combination – No listing within the art of ninjutsu is closed-ended. And the same goes for weapons. This classification is for those weapons that have no definitive category. Weapons like the naginata and spear – combining the characteristics of stick and bladed weapons, kyoketsu-shoge and kusari-gama – the bringing together of bladed, and flexible weapons, and others like them belong here.

Learn Ninjutsu – Expanding the Number of Techniques You “Own” by Using the Secret of the Kihon Happo

To learn ninjutsu is to go beyond the conventional idea of martial arts. What many see – including students and teachers within the art today – is merely one aspect of a system of living life fully – of recreating yourself to realize your fullest potential. And this system has been producing real results for its practitioners for well over 900 years!

 

One of the qualities that you must develop, not just for effective self defense, but for producing results in every facet of your life, is that of “strategic thinking.” What that means is that you must go from being at the mercy of the automatic, habitual response way of thinking and acting that was developed as a child, to the mature, observational, and problem-solving mindset that…

 

Sees what is going on, behind and beyond the outward actions…

 

…recognizes how that fits into a bigger picture, or is part of a grander goal/result, and…

 

…realizes the best course of action which will produce the results needed.

 

This is a lesson inherent in the Ninja’s kihon happo. But, hidden within this apparently fixed set of basic techniques, is a method for discovering more than just how to block, punch, kick, and throw an opponent across a dojo floor.

 

Without going into the specific models that most students are familiar with, this article will focus on the lesson – not what the lesson looks like. So, what I’m going to do is to outline a way to turn 1 simple technique example into much more. In fact…

 

…what I’m about to give you should keep you busy for a long time to come, and allow you to realize that your teacher only had to teach you one technique for each principle to be learned – rather than the hundreds that everyone seems to be bent on collecting.

 

So, lets begin with a simple model – one where you are defending against a right punch to the face from your attacker. For the purposes of this article, we’ll assume that the base model has the attacker throwing what many consider to be a “traditional” lunging, straight punch.

 

And the model we’ll use is one where we pull back and away from his attack at a 45 degree angle, inside the attack, to catch his balance, and then counter attack with an omote shuto, palm-up knifehand strike to the side of his neck.

 

So, let’s take the lesson of “creating variations” from the kihon happo and, after we get the basic model, let’s double our technique by training it against a left punch. Then, in whatever order you want, you can…

 

 

Practice by going outside the attack – left and right. Now we have 4 techniques.
Do this with your attacker throwing a straight kick instead. Now we have how many? Right… 8.
Replace the kick with a stomach punch. How many now?
Now defend against a hook punch.
How about a knife stab or a swinging strike from a club or hanbo (“half-staff”)?

 

Get the idea?

 

By my count, my teacher’s single technique model is now 24 techniques!

 

And, believe it or not, each attack change will create different challenges that can only be answered by letting go of the limiting thinking of the beginner focused on step-by-step mechanics – and thinking strategically about distance, timing, and the results you’re trying to create.

Learn Ninjutsu – The 3 Footwork Patterns in the Ninja’s Sanshin No Kata

As you train to learn ninjutsu, especially in your ninpo-taijutsu, “ninja’s body art,” you must remember to stay focused on the basics. These basics are not only the foundation of mastery – they are mastery itself! One of the three basics of your ninpo-taijutsu is that of footwork.

As you train to learn ninjutsu, especially in your ninpo-taijutsu, “ninja’s body art,” you must remember to stay focused on the basics. These basics are not only the foundation of mastery – they are mastery itself! One of the three basics of your ninpo-taijutsu is that of footwork.

 

This article focuses on the 3 footwork patterns and their use in the “penetration models” known as the Sanshin no Kata. After you read this article, you will be able to take better control of your footwork, as-well-as be able to see the Sanshin from a much deeper perspective.

 

From the ninja’s perspective, the power of his or her techniques is generated from the ground up – on a stable base capable of effectively and efficiently carrying the torso. This is not to be confused with the static, immovable stances seen in many karate systems, but rather points to a need by ancient warriors to develop a method of using the legs and feet in a way that provides for stability on the muddy-bloody battlefields which would cause the unprepared and off-balanced combatant to easily slip and fall.

 

This type of footwork also provides for quick, agile maneuvers which also allowed the shadow warrior to deliver powerful, knock-down strikes and kicks to larger, stronger, and the better-armored bodies of their opponent. But, it does this without the upper-body focused movement indicative of boxers and mma fighters.

 

The basis for proper footwork lies in the Ninja’s Sanshin no Kata, “3 hearts examples” designed to teach the future warrior how to “penetrate” his opponent’s defenses and deliver debilitating strikes. The foundation of, what I call “Sanshin footwork,” lies in your ability to move easily between the footwork positions of Ichimonji and shizen no kamae.

 

The three forms of basic Sanshin movement are matched to the 3 fight situations that would require you to punch, kick, or respond to your assailant’s attacks. They are:

 

 

1) Forward stepping – This is where you step forward with your rear leg, passing through shizen and ending up in a forward Ichimonji as you strike.
2) Backward stepping – Here, your opponent may be coming in with overwhelming speed and power, which makes it necessary to follow up with another retreating movement after you receive his first strike. In this case, you step backwards with your leading leg into a rear ichimonji – striking if possible as you go.
3) “Change-step” stepping – In this instance, you find yourself too close to step in either a forward or backwards manner, but you want to generate full, knock-down power with the spine twist that is part of the taijutsu striking method. This change-step can be executed in two different ways, depending on certain variables and factors such as weight distribution over your feet, and where the edge of the kukan (“space of potential” between the combatant’s bodies) is. These 2 change-step methods are: a. Pulling the lead leg back to shizen (or the appropriate spot based on spacing), and stepping forward with the rear leg.
b. Stepping forward to shizen (or the appropriate spot) with the rear foot, and then stepping back with the lead leg.

When done properly, and understood in the context of the situation (rather than based on a memorized technique), these three footwork methods allow the Ninja to attack his opponent’s exposed targets while:

 

 

1) Stepping forward / Advancing
2) Stepping away / Retreating, and…
3) Remaining in the same space / Holding

One of the most commonly known, and yet misunderstood set of techniques within modern Ninja training is known as the Kihon Happo. These basic techniques are introduced to new students who are looking to learn ninjutsu, very early in their training.

This article will give you a deeper understanding of this so-called set of “basic” techniques, and allow you to see through the forms to the true lessons waiting for you. But, to begin your understanding, you must first know what I’m talking about.

The concept of the Kihon Happo is said to have originated in the Gyokko-Ryu (“Jewel (or Jade) Tiger School”), one of the 9 historical combat lineages that make up the Bujinkan Dojo of current generation grandmaster, Masaaki Hatsumi. However, what is collectively known as the kihon happo is really a combining of 2 important sets of techniques which teach:

1) The effective use of the Ninja’s kamae (body-mind-spirit postures) for controlling an attack, and…

2) Effective use of body dynamics and strategies for escaping from grabbing attacks

Together, both sets convey the foundational techniques and skills that will show up again and again, regardless of the technique or kata being used in future training.

And this leads to knowing just what these “secrets”, strategies, and “basics” are, that a student is supposed to be learning.

One of the questions that I ask my intermediate and advanced students who have learned these models is:

“What are these techniques teaching us?”

And, while it is very easy to just describe the step-by-step actions being performed – there is so much more that you cannot see if you’re only looking at the form of the technique. Because, if you’re only focusing on say, Ichimonji no kata, from the perspective of…

The real power hidden within the models of the kihon happo is not in “what” you are doing, but in:

WHY you are doing it

WHEN you are doing it

WHERE you are positioning your body, limbs, and targets relative to your opponent, and…

HOW you are delivering your strikes

The kihon happo is said to be about “creation.” But, unless you know what you’re “creating,” it doesn’t help much to know that. And, while I talk about this concept in other articles, and it’s covered quite extensively in my Advanced Sanshin & Kihon Happo Home Study Course, the thing to know about this concept is that it transcends the physical aspects of the technique models themselves.

It has to!

Because the point of kihon happo training is to create variation after variation of each technique – 8 variations, and then eight variations of each variation, and then 8 of each of these, into infinity – until the base models become just variations among variations.

And yet, through all of this, the concepts and principles – the very foundation of the kata models and the invisible lessons that you need to learn to see – never change!
